Hellbender

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is asking the public to report sightings of giant salamanders called hellbenders, also known as water dogs or snot otters because of their slimy secretions. Hellbenders are North America’s largest salamander, growing up to 2.5 feet in length. The hellbender population dwindles as water quality declines. However, with the increase in grassroot efforts, good water quality is sustaining and supporting the hellbender population. The NCWRC requests individuals to not pick them up, but email the physical location or GPS coordinates and a photo if possible to biologist Lori Williams at lori.williams@ncwildlife.org. Observers may also report sightings or violations to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission help line at 1-866-318-2401, 1-919-707-0050 or 1-800-622-7137.
