Working at the local level in Southwestern NC to conserve, protect and restore North America's Coldwater Fisheries and their Watersheds. The Trout Unlimited Anaka Chapter #201 has a significant history surrounding the “Unaka” designation. The name unaka is rooted in the Cherokee language designate unega, which means white (Mooney, J, 1972). Beliefs reveal, 1 in 4 trees in the Unaka Range were American Chestnut trees prior to the great Chestnut Blight. Chestnuts having long white blossoms, the Unaka Mountains turned white in color during the blossoming of the chestnut trees, and therefore called the White Mountains by the local Cherokee (Wikipedia, Retrieved; 15 July 2020). Additionally, in some geological and in historical sources, the term "Unaka Range" is used to identify the entire crest of the Appalachian Mountains along the Tennessee-North Carolina border, including the Unakas, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Bald Mountains, the Unicoi Mountains and the Mountains in the Big and Little Frog Mountain Wilderness (Wilderness Connect, Retrieved; 15 July 2020).
